Bio: Mike McCarthy joined the KGMB9 team in 2006 and is responsible for the engineering staff. Mike moved to Hawaii from the New England area where he previously worked at both WSHM and WFSB.

Founded in 1952, KGMB9 was the first television station here in Hawaii. The station was added to the existing KGMB-AM facility and originally carried broadcasts from all three networks. Now a CBS licensed affiliate, our current facility still makes use of the original 40’ x 90’ studio and is used for news, weather, and commercial production. We provide all network HD programming available and some syndicated programming to our viewers. Recently we have broadcast several live and taped local HD productions; all in 1080i. Adding more HD production capability has been a primary focus, especially for local daily news. We are just one of many broadcasters who have added camera robotics systems from Telemetrics to our production facility to help us accomplish that goal.

Recently, our new owners, HITV Operating Company, Inc. (a subsidiary of MCG Capital) were looking for innovative ways to upgrade our local news coverage and studio capabilities while also trimming costs. The team at KGMB decided to deploy a camera robotics and control solution.

We began planning to implement a camera robotic studio system after meeting with Telemetrics at the 2007 NAB show. At that time, we were using conventional camera pedestals that required camera operators. We determined that a new camera robotics system from Telemetrics could reduce our overhead by allowing a single operator to control all camera functions.

The Telemetrics camera robotics equipment we ultimately deployed here at the station includes the CP-D-3A Desktop Servo Control Panel, the CPS Studio Control System, CP-LP-S2 Pan/Tilt Heads and Televator™ EP-PT-S2 Elevating Pedestals. Because we use Sony 300 box cameras, which is a very cost effective choice for a HD camera, utilizing the CCU control through a Telemetrics robotic interface has added to our overall savings. We were able to add an additional camera, going from three cameras to four using robotics. It gives our newscast a great look. It’s extremely efficient to have four cameras running with just one operator.

Additionally, the CPS-ST-S Studio Control System Software package enables us to operate efficiently and adds consistency to our look. The software package also provides an additional cost savings since multiple, expensive manufacturer’s CCU control panels are replaced with one CPS-ST-S package. The software allows from 9 to 36 preset camera shots on an easy to use touch-screen at one time. A single operator, using the ON-AIR move feature, can effect smooth transitions from one preset to the next.

Cable requirements were also minimized at the camera source because the CCU controls are now multiplexed with the pan/tilt data.

Several staff members from Telemetrics volunteered to travel to Hawaii in order to assist us with the installation and training. However (much to their disappointment I’m sure), we were able to complete the installation and perform all appropriate training on our own, since we had prior experience working with Telemetrics and their equipment. This system is so easy to use, we were able to go on the air with it only two weeks after installation. Everything went quite smoothly, and when we had a question Telemetrics' support team responded, and continues to respond to us, quickly and professionally.
