Telemetrics Pushes Envelope for YES Network Simulcast

Simulcast Television Production Uses Advanced Camera Robotics

Outside of conventional studio applications, Telemetrics robotic camera control systems are often used in unique situations that range from hospital operating rooms to major league baseball stadiums to flight control at the Kennedy Space Center. Also included on this list of innovative applications is its camera system deployed for the YES Network’s live simulcast of the popular New York area WFAN radio talk show, Mike’s On hosted by Mike Francesa. YES has been the nation’s most-watched regional sports network the past 10 years.

While the show originates from the WFAN radio studios in lower Manhattan, the live television simulcast is produced and directed from a control room at YES Network’s Stamford, CT studios. The four cameras in the radio studio are switched while live on-air, and special effects, graphics and highlight video clips are added to make a comprehensive television program that augments the radio show for the TV viewers across the country.

The camera robotics mounted in the studio include Telemetrics CTS-S2 Trolley Systems with PT-CP-S4 Pan-Tilt Heads mounted on a specially designed Telemetrics track that curves around three sides of the studio. Each of the pan/tilt heads has a Sony HDCX-300 camera mounted to it. A fourth Sony camera is mounted on a straight track in the studio’s control room.

The cameras are controlled for the simulcast from the YES studios, approximately 40 miles north of Manhattan. The YES simulcast Director and technical Director operate the system remotely from YES’ studios using a Telemetrics CP-3-DA Control Panel which is connected via a dedicated data line to a Telemetrics DS-4 Robotics Controller in the New York radio studio. This provides the director with the ability to move, pan, tilt, zoom and focus the cameras, and the TD the ability to make all shading adjustments. A return Video-Over-IP system allows Francesa to see the television broadcast in real time.

Mike’s On airs from 1 to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday on WFAN 660AM, 101.9FM, streams at and is simulcast live on YES. YES also simulcasts Francesa's nationally syndicated WFAN Radio show "Mike Francesa’s Football Sunday", each Sunday during the NFL season.

"The way television and radio engage audiences continues to evolve, and Telemetrics camera robotics systems continue to play an active role in providing production creativity, versatility and efficiency," said Anthony Cuomo, President, Telemetrics, Inc. "The YES Network is keeping the fan experience fresh by simulcasting popular program content while keeping costs under control."
