Telemetrics Camera Robotics Systems Heighten Visibility
For Michigan House of Representatives.

Mahwah, NJ -- A bipartisan effort on behalf of State Legislators in Michigan has taken shape to provide voters throughout the state with greater access to government proceedings. At the heart of the effort is the new House Office Building in Lansing, MI complete with a state of the art camera robotics system from Telemetrics, Inc. The camera robotics system, which has been up and running since January, serves as a “fly on the wall” to provide unobtrusive live coverage of proceedings from the seven House Standing Committee and Hearing Rooms located in the building.

The new House Office Building features the latest technologies and amenities for State Legislators to conduct daily business while providing access to live proceedings both on-site and via the media. The Telemetrics camera robotics system installed in the facility is the result of a collaborative design effort headed by Communication Systems Group – a Telemetrics installing dealer located in Oak Park, MI – and the team of Dave Smith and Dave Koskinen who are Media Production Specialists at the Michigan House of Representatives.

The Telemetrics camera robotics system is employed in seven rooms that span two floors of the building. Three larger Hearing Rooms located on the fifth floor offer greater seating areas – one room seats 200 – and include large screen projection systems which can be linked to one another in the event overflow seating is required. Four standard Committee Rooms are located on the third floor of the building. All of the facility’s robotic cameras are tied into a centralized control room where up to two separate live events can be produced simultaneously for webcasting, output to ENG trucks for broadcast, or for MGTV which airs five days a week on cable.

Each of the seven rooms feature three robotic cameras consisting of a Telemetrics PT-CP Compact Pan/Tilt Mechanism outfitted with a Panasonic 3CCD camera and a zoom lens. A total of 21 camera robotic units are employed throughout the facility.

“We were concerned with the length of the cable runs and possible delay problems with camera control,” said Dave Smith. “The Telemetrics camera robotics equipment has performed flawlessly over coax cable runs as long as 500 feet. We are very pleased with their performance capabilities.”

Telemetrics’ PT-CP is a precision pan/tilt device with smooth and variable operating speeds. The units are equipped with Telemetrics’ PTO-CP-P Positional Preset Option to store and instantly recall frequently used shots. The camera robotics are connected to Telemetrics CP-RMR-S Quad Serial Receivers and PS-RM3 Power Supplies. This allows all video and control signals from up to four cameras to be multiplexed to the control room via a single coax cable. All of the robotic cameras are controlled using two Telemetrics CP-D-2A Desktop Controllers. The units feature dual proportional joysticks for smooth and easy camera control, 32 memory presets, four camera select buttons and four optional select buttons (for use with additional cameras or Telemetrics' Weatherproof Camera Systems or H-track Trolley System).

“All of our productions are live so pan/tilt performance was a significant criteria when we were reviewing products. We do not have the luxury to edit out rough camera movements and noise,” said Mr. Smith. “Telemetrics PT-CP pan tilt mechanisms delivered the smoothest and quietest operation of all the units we tested. This is important since it allows us to provide comprehensive coverage that’s pleasing to watch and without distractions at the camera site.”

“The programmable capabilities of the Telemetrics camera robotic system also provides us with greater control capabilities”, continued Mr. Smith. “All of these factors made Telemetrics the easy selection for us. In fact, if we were to do it all over again, there’s nothing I would change.”
